Bio

Dr. Lis is aiming to find a cure for sickle cell anemia, a disorder that causes red blood cells to become misshapen and break down. He hopes to both study the disease and develop a potential treatment by correcting the mutation in tissue from affected patients and then converting the corrected cells to blood stem cells. These stem cells should eventually develop into healthy blood cells. This research could provide an approach to generate an unlimited supply of healthy red blood cells to replace the deformed ones caused by the sickle cell mutation. He completed his postdoctoral studies in Dr. Shahin Rafii’s lab.
