Stem Cell Conmen Plead Guilty to Charges of Misbranded Treatment and Unapproved Drugs
Given the hope stem cell research offers, some have taken advantage of patients, peddling unapproved, risky “cures” to disease. A 60 Minutes report in 2006 investigated costly stem cell treatments offered by self-proclaimed doctor Lawrence Stowe that initiated a formal inspection by the FDA and FBI. What they found were misrepresented and dodgy treatments in violation of interstate law. Stowe and his colleagues have been indicted, and, on September 7th, they plead guilty to charges brought against them. This sets an important precedent for future investigations of purported "stem cell cures" for sale.
