Bio
Dr. Ortiz-Virumbrales’ research focused on a particular type of brain cells whose degeneration contributes to cognitive decline in Alzheimer’s disease patients. She created a stem cell-based model using these specific brain cells and recreated conditions found in either a healthy brain or one affected by Alzheimer’s disease. She employed this model system to investigate the effects of one specific gene mutation, working to identify specific targets for drug treatments. She completed her postdoctoral studies at Mount Sinai in Dr. Samuel Gandy’s lab.
