Bio

Dr. Bandi successfully demonstrated that liver cells could be generated from embryonic stem cells, and that these cells exhibited similar properties to those of human liver cells, therefore providing the potential to rescue liver cells from failure. Currently, whole liver transplantation is most commonly performed to cure liver diseases. However, since organ donations often do not meet demand, many individuals are interested in creating alternative sources of liver cells like the kinds produced through Dr. Bandi’s research. He transplanted stem cell-derived liver cells into mice, rescuing them from liver failure and offering exciting possibilities for stem cell liver model development, as well as therapeutic applications. He completed his postdoctoral studies at Albert Einstein in Dr. Sanjeev Gupta’s lab.
