NYSCF Featured in Drug Discovery News Article on Stem Cell Research
Interviewed for Drug Discovery News, NYSCF CEO Susan L. Solomon and NYSCF Vice President of Research and Development Stephen Chang, PhD, revealed the potential for stem cells to be used as models for drug discovery. Recently, researchers at the NYSCF Laboratory generated induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cell lines from skin samples of Alzheimer’s patients. The resultant cells were then reprogrammed into pertinent cell types, notably forebrain neurons affected by the disease, and used in research initiatives with Samuel Gandy, MD, PhD, and his laboratory at Mount Sinai. Per Dr. Chang, this “disease in a dish” method can be translated to other disease areas.
