Summer Internship Program

NYSCF 2017 Summer Internship Program

The New York Stem Cell Foundation (NYSCF) is a rapidly growing and highly successful nonprofit whose mission is to accelerate cures through stem cell research. We are a vibrant, growing organization that advances cutting-edge stem cell research in our own laboratory and through support for talented scientists at other institutions.

Program Overview
Each year, several diverse, high-achieving undergraduate students are selected to work in New York City as part of NYSCF’s Summer Internship Program. The program is a ten week unique summer enrichment internship program that provides students a rare glimpse into the fast-paced world of stem cell research, insight into life at an entrepreneurial nonprofit research institute, exposure to career opportunities in science, and connections to valuable professional and peer networks. Participants have the opportunity to gain direct experience with stem cells and science by conducting scientific research at the NYSCF Research Institute. In addition, internship opportunities are available in our office location to a select group of talented individuals.

Interships will be available in the following departments: Laboratory – Array Team, Research – various disease areas, Engineering | Business Office – Marketing and Events, Fundraising, Scientific Programs, External Programs, Executive Business Office.

Application Process
The application process is rigorous, and ensures committed, high-quality applicants are accepted into the program. Students must submit an updated resume and cover letter, two letters of recommendation, transcripts, and answers to a series of short essay questions. Following the initial screening, shortlisted candidates are invited to interview with their prospective mentors and team. Finally, offers are made to candidates, who begin their internships the first week of June.

Additional Program Details
Once accepted into the program, participants are assigned a lead mentor, but will have the opportunity to engage with individuals across the organization throughout the program both formally and informally. Formal programmatic activities include: a weekly “Brown Bag Lunch Series” which rotates each week to feature different leaders from each department, a journal club at the laboratory as well as weekly laboratory meetings where NYSCF scientists present their research, and an end-of-program intern presentation day. The program also offers ample opportunity for informal interaction and learning in the office and at the laboratory, at staff outings, and special NYSCF events, where interns have the chance to meet the foremost scientific experts in stem cell research as well as leaders in business and politics.

NYSCF’s progressive organizational structure provides an opportunity for all participants, regardless of track, to obtain a holistic understanding of the complex and dynamic environment in which scientific research actually occurs. Not only do they see and participate in technical science, interns are exposed to the inner workings of a nonprofit research institute and all the non-science activities that go into making research possible.

  • Interns will receive a stipend of $385 per week during the internship period, subject to taxes.
  • Relocation assistance will not be provided.
